Twin Falls

Twin Falls

December 7, 2009

The recent resurgence in alt-folk and alt-country shows few signs of abating, buoyed as it is by the mainstream coverage lavished upon bands like Mumford and Sons. Twin Falls fit nicely into this mould, even though they are firmly outside the West London clique that has spawned so many of these acts.

By and large a project of songwriter Luke Stidson (who, incidentally, ran a label called Exercise1 until last year, putting out the quite excellent 50 Minutes compilation), Twin Falls’ output is thus far limited to one EP, ‘We Will Begin To Flicker’. This collection of maudlin, alt-country songs is at its best when it most firmly embraces its pop elements; two-and-a-half minute opener ‘Janie I Will Only Let You Down’ should, by rights, have been a massive single with its swooping strings and insanely catchy chorus.

Twin Falls are not (at least not yet) going to be changing the face of popular music; theirs is a sound roughly akin to a twee Whiskeytown. But there is more than enough going on here to keep you amused when all you desire is something saccharine -sweet and not too challenging.
