Son Lux is a New York based composer, known to his mother as Ryan Lott. His debut longplayer, released in 2008 on the constantly-surprising anticon, is a fascinating (and unfairly overlooked) mix of Reichian piano and sampler phrases, Lott’s breathy, damaged voice, and huge orchestral sweeps. All this sits atop beats that could have come straight out of Detroit hip-hop compilation.
Having taken a break from his Son Lux project to concentrate on making dance music, Lott has revisited Weapons – the centrepiece of the album.
The Weapons EP sees Lott reinterpreting the track, along with anticon artists Polyphonic and Alias. But the standout is this rework from modern-classical posterboy Nico Muhly.
