Mat Riviere

Mat Riviere

December 8, 2009

Brainlove are amongst my favourite labels. Having put out a string of moderately unhinged pop records (Pagan Wanderer Lu being a prime example of a Brainlove artist) and apparently being thoroughly nice with it, they are one of an ever-shrinking list of labels that are worth trusting.

FYH, the debut single from Mat Riviere, is the latest Brainlove release. Norfolk-born Riviere is a solo artist who extricates strange, purgatorial groans from nigh-on unrecognisable instruments. FYH is all ethereal pads, twisted guitar and icy 808 beats, with Riviere’s distant voice providing a surprisingly catchy chorus. His vocal has something of the megalomaniac about it – every syllable is very deliberately pronounced, to the point where the odd dropped ‘t’ puts you on edge.

Riviere’s debut album is out on Brainlove in January. In the meantime, check out the video to your right and download the single below.
